- What is the difference between Dual Enrollment and Dual Credit?Dual Enrollment is the broad term for taking college classes while in high school. Dual Credit is a specific type of dual enrollment that gives you credit at your high school and at UAA simultaneously.
- Who pays for the classes?Policies vary by district and program. Some Middle Colleges may be funded by the school district. Standard Dual Enrollment is often paid directly by the family. Local programs like JumpStart (KPC) offer specific tuition subsidies.
- Are textbooks included? In some district-funded programs (like Anchorage Middle College), textbooks are provided. For individual dual enrollment, students are usually responsible for purchasing their own books and lab materials through the UAA Bookstore.
- Does dual enrollment go on my permanent record?Yes. Every course you take at UAA creates a permanent college transcript. This grade will stay with you forever and must be reported if you apply to other colleges in the future.
- What happens if I fail or need to drop a class? If you are struggling, talk to your high school counselor or UAA Academic advisor immediately. If you drop before the "Add/Drop Deadline," the course disappears from your record. If you drop after the deadline but before the withdrawal date, a "W" appears on your transcript. This doesn't affect your GPA, but it can impact future Financial Aid eligibility.
- How do I get my UAA credits onto my high school transcript? If taking dual enrollment classes on your own, once you complete your UAA course, you (the student) must request an official transcript or provide your final grade report to your high school registrar to ensure you receive high school credit. Programs like Middle College and ANSEP work with your high school directly to ensure it is on your transcript.
- Can my parents check my grades or talk to my professor? No. Under federal law (FERPA), college instructors can only communicate directly with the student. If a student wants their parents to have access to their records, they must sign a
- What is the "Adult Learning Environment"?
UAA classrooms are designed for adults. Course content, discussions, and assignments are not censored for minors. Students are expected to handle mature topics and manage their own deadlines without reminders from the university.
- Will these credits transfer to other universities?
Most public and private universities across the U.S. accept UAA credits. However, we always recommend checking with your "target" university’s admissions office to see exactly how the credits will apply to your specific major.
- What is a "Stackable Credential"?
It’s like a building block. The credits you earn now can lead to an Occupational Endorsement (OEC), which then counts toward an Associate Degree, which eventually counts toward a Bachelor’s Degree. You aren't just taking classes; you're finishing parts of a degree early.
- Does taking Dual Enrollment affect my financial aid?
Dual Enrollment students are considered non-degree seeking students and do not qualify for financial aid.
When a student becomes a degree seeking student at UAA, their dual enrollment courses count toward Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). SAP is a standard of academic performance created by the federal government to make sure students are continually making measurable progress towards their degree to be eligible to receive financial aid. If a student does not meet these requirements, they are subject to losing their federal, state and institutional financial aid awards.
