The UAA School of Social Work is dedicated to advancing social work practice in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ through baccalaureate and master’s education, research, and service. Social work is a profession committed to ethical and research-informed practice that assists individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, advances social, economic, and environmental justice, and engages in policy practice. MSW student Keyshon China is dedicated to serving youth and underserved communities, gaining hands-on experience through UAA's School of Social Work and various extracurricular organizations.
Ever since she was six years old, Panikaa Teeple, B.S.W. Social Work ’21, knew that spreading love was her life’s purpose. Next year, Teeple will have the opportunity to spread love internationally as UAA’s latest recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant, which provides students in more than 140 countries the opportunity to pursue graduate study and research abroad.
UAA alumna and associate professor Holly Martinson hopes the new Biomed U-RISE program "lights a fire" in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ's research community by empowering undergraduate students with lab experience, mentorship and financial assistance. Martinson and co-PI, Professor Tracey Burke, welcomed the first cohort this academic year and will soon open applications for cohort two.
Co-principal investigators Tracey Burke, Ph.D., professor in the School of Social Work, and Holly Martinson, Ph.D., associate professor in the WWAMI School of Medical Education, hope the program empowers more Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æns to pursue an advanced biomedical, research-focused degree and contribute to the research community.
Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ is tied for the highest number of female veterans in the United States, but many of them do not use services through the VA in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ. Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ’s News Source spoke to UAA Assistant Professor and veteran, Vanessa Meade, about potential obstacles related to the issue.
Student & Community sERVICES
Project BLENDS is a training program designed to prepare graduates to work collaboratively to support infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children with high intensity social-emotional needs and their families.
The School-Based Social Work Education and Network Development Program (Project SSWEND) is an innovative partnership between the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ and the Anchorage School District (ASD).
Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Interprofessional Distance Learning Consortium
AK-IDLC is a program that trains graduate students in the delivery of culturally responsive behavioral health care using face-to-face and telehealth methods.
OML is a state-wide women veterans project that connects women veterans with resources in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ. The project supports the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ women veteran community and acknowledges the achievements of women veterans.
