Biography

Born to Canadian parents and raised in the United States, I first came to Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ as a young man and eventually made it my home. I spent my entire career in public secondary education as a high school teacher and dean of students in one of Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ’s largest rural school districts, serving small Yup’ik communities and the regional hub of Bethel. During that time, I earned an M.A. in English literature, met my wife—who is from the village of Toksook Bay—and together we raised seven children. After retiring from public education, I began a second career with the University of Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ. I serve as a Health Careers Advisor and support pre-nursing and nursing students—most of whom are Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Native—through the Recruitment and Retention of Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ Natives into Nursing (RRANN) program, advising students in Bethel and across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
