Our mission is to equip justice leaders to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
By analyzing the causes and consequences of crime, we prepare our graduates to shape
and advance the evidence-based practices and policies necessary for a safer, healthier
Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ. By grounding our academic programs and faculty research in the unique context
of our state, we ensure the next generation of Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ justice practitioners has the
analytical tools and integrity required to lead an effective justice system for all
Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æns.
In our , explore some of society’s most important issues, including incarceration, juvenile
justice, victimology, and policing while building a strong foundation in criminology
and criminal justice theory, research, and policymaking. You’ll develop the skills
you need to evaluate and improve policies and systems, including policing, courts,
and corrections. A is also offered.
Our graduates are ready to pursue a variety of careers providing direct services, service support, and organizational leadership to public, private, and governmental organizations. Potential career pathways include:

From classroom to courtroom: UAA opens the John E. Havelock Trial Simulation Center
With the recent opening of the John E. Havelock Trial Simulation Courtroom, students now have access to a premier, experiential learning environment to master their craft. The courtroom will also serve as a community resource where Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ’s legal professionals can hold practice trials and conduct continuing education and training.

The newly opened Havelock Trial Simulation Courtroom provides UAA students and others with hands-on, experiential learning in a setting identical to courts in which they will eventually practice law. The classroom is named after John E. Havelock, founding director of the UAA Justice Center.

UAA opens new trial simulation courtroom for justice students
The John E. Havelock Trial Simulation Courtroom officially opened on the UAA campus, expanding hands-on training opportunities for students pursuing legal careers in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ. University faculty, staff, and students gathered on Feb. 20 to celebrate the classroom's formal dedication an opening.
Message from the program CHAIR
If you are interested in why people commit crime, why some behaviors are criminalized and others are not, how society responds to crime, how to reduce crime, or how to help victims, you will love the Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice program. We offer online and face-to-face courses on a wide variety of topics, such as juvenile justice, policing, courts, jails and prisons, offender re-entry, criminological theory, victimization, criminal investigation, forensic science, crime prevention, ethics in the criminal justice system, criminal law, and criminal justice research.
Our faculty are engaged in research and community service on issues that directly affect Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æns, such as intimate partner violence, sexual assault, homelessness, correctional populations, policing and behavioral health, and police use of deadly force. These experiences are brought into the classroom so that students are connected to what is really happening with criminal justice in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ.
Graduates of our program serve all over the state to keep Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æns safe. Some work in police agencies, like the Anchorage Police Department or Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ State Troopers, or in corrections at the Department of Corrections, Division of Juvenile Justice, or Division of Probation and Parole. There are vibrant nonprofit and commercial sectors that work in areas directly and indirectly related to criminal justice, and our graduates are successful finding meaningful careers there. Many of our graduates continue their studies, earning masters or doctoral degrees, or going to law school and becoming attorneys.
