Important changes coming to financial aid for the 2026-27 academic year
by Green & Gold News |
Beginning July 1, 2026 there are significant changes scheduled to be enacted to certain federal financial aid programs as a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) that was signed into law in July 2025.
Some of the major changes include:
- Financial aid disbursement will be later this year: During previous semesters, the Financial Aid Office has had the ability to begin disbursing financial aid to student account balances as early as ten days before the start of classes. However, due to changes from the OBBBA, the UAA Office of Financial Aid will begin disbursing fall 2026 financial aid on the first day of classes at the earliest (Aug. 24). Please note: Aug. 24 is the approximate fall 2026 disbursement date and is subject to change. This tentative disbursement date is for students who do not have any outstanding requirements.
- Federal student loans will now be prorated: If using a federal subsidized, unsubsidized and/or Graduate PLUS student loan, these loans will now be prorated based on enrollment status if less than full-time. Full-time status is 12+ credits for undergraduate students and 9+ credits for graduate students.
- Withdrawing from classes will impact future loan eligibility: If planning to withdraw from a class or classes, students should reach out to the UAA Office of Financial Aid so they may explain any potential consequences that may come as a result of withdrawing. Students should not withdraw from classes without first consulting with the UAA Office of Financial Aid.
This announcement is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the proposed changes. All of this information is subject to change or delays, as final rules have not been published. The most up-to-date information may be found online.
The UAA Office of Financial Aid understands this transition may cause confusion and is available to help. Students may reach out to the UAA Office of Financial Aid with questions or requests for further clarification on any of these upcoming changes.
