Student Spotlight: MiLee Yu – 2025 BSW Student of the Year

MiLee Yu is a graduate of the Âé¶¹ÎÞÂë°æâ€™s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program, and is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. In September 2025, MiLee was awarded the BSW Student of the Year award at the Biennial National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Âé¶¹ÎÞÂë°æ Chapter Conference. MiLee was selected based on her outstanding academic performance, leadership, and her commitment to the values of the social work profession.

What brought you to the UAA College of Health?:
I was interested in a career in Social Work and they had an accelerated MSW.
Why did you choose the degree you are pursuing? What would your dream job be?:
I chose a BSW and MSW due to wanting to help adolescents, especially concerning mental
health issues.
What organizations are you involved in on campus?:
I am involved in the Student Social Work Coalition and the MSW Coalition, both of
which have helped me connect with the community and grow my professional skills as
a social worker.
Have you been involved with any other experience you'd like to tell us about?:
I am a CESA (Community-Engaged Student Assistantship) student, and this has helped
me grow my research skills.
What words of wisdom do you have for underclassmen or youth who are still considering
their options after high school?:
Expand your horizons by trying things that interest you; at best, you find something
you like and at worst, you will learn more about yourself.
What is a cause you care about?:
Mental health issues concerning adolescents.
What is your favorite spot on campus and why?:
Student Lounge in PSB because it's an awesome place to hang out and study.
What is your plan after graduation?:
Hopefully to work at SCF (Southcentral Foundation) or as a school counselor.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?:
Reading manga, watching anime, playing/cuddling my cat, spending time with family
and friends, and volunteering in the community.
What is your secret to college success?:
Learning to ask for help and taking things one day at a time.
What has been your happiest/proudest moment?:
Graduating with my BSW.
