Remembering Dean Weidner and His Lasting Impact on CBPP
by CBPP |
The College of Business and Public Policy at the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ joins
the Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ community in mourning the passing of Dean Weidner, Founder and Chairman
of Weidner Apartment Homes, who passed away on March 17, 2026.
Dean Weidner’s impact on Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ, and especially on the College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), is something that will be felt for generations. He was not only a successful business leader, but someone who truly believed in investing in people and creating opportunities for others.
He began his career in real estate at a young age and purchased his first apartment building in Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ in 1973. Over time, he grew Weidner Apartment Homes into one of the largest multifamily housing companies in North America, with a strong presence in both the United States and Canada. Here in Anchorage, his work helped shape the housing landscape and created stability for thousands of residents.
At UAA, his legacy is deeply connected to CBPP. He played a key role in the creation and continued support of the Property Management and Real Estate Program. This program has become a direct pathway for students into careers in real estate and property management, giving them access to internships, mentorship, and real-world experience.
One of the most visible and lasting contributions to the college is the Weidner Center
for Real Estate Management, located in Rasmuson Hall. Opened in 2015 through funding
from Dean and Ana Weidner, the center serves as a dedicated space for students, faculty,
and industry partners to connect. Located on the first floor in RH 111, the space
is used for classroom sessions, workshops, and professional development opportunities.
What stood out most about Dean Weidner was his belief that if you want an industry to grow, you have to invest in people early. That mindset is something we continue to see reflected in CBPP today. Our college serves as a workforce pipeline for Anchorage and the broader Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ community, and his vision played a meaningful role in shaping that.
His impact went beyond the university. He was recognized across Â鶹ÎÞÂë°æ for his philanthropy and leadership, and he consistently gave back to the community in ways that made a real difference. Whether it was supporting education, workforce development, or community needs, his approach was always thoughtful and focused on long term impact.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who had the opportunity to work with him. His influence will continue to be felt across our college and community for years to come.
